Post graduate course is a degree that student’s study after they have graduated with a bachelor’s degree.  Basically, student need to have completed a bachelor’s degree before embarking on a post graduate degree (there are some exceptions to this basic rules). There are four types of post graduate degree available such as taught course, research degree, conversion, and professional qualification.

Postgraduate Taught courses

There are two types of taught courses such as master’s degree and postgraduate diploma or certificate. The duration of a taught master’s course is usually over one or two years and includes a dissertation or project in most subjects.

  • Taught Master’s courses can be a Master of the Art (MA), a Master of Science (MSc), a Master of Business Administration (MBA) and a Master of Engineering (Meng) degree.
  • Postgraduate diploma or certificate are academic or vocational qualifications. A post graduate diploma course takes around 9 months to one year whereas the certificate course can take six months.
  • There are opportunities to study integrated master’s degree, which form part of undergraduate degree. It also important to know that not every master’s degree is fully taught degree. For example, a student can do a Master of Research degree, which can focus on around independent research. Although, a Master of Research degree is still consider/count as a taught course, 60 % of the course focus on independent individual research project.

Entry requirement for a Postgraduate Taught course

Entry requirement for postgraduate master’s degree vary based on subject area and course that are chosen for study. Some of the example of entry requirement are:

  • Certificate and transcript of compilation of a bachelor’s degree
  • Evidence of English proficiency certificate (unless first degree was taught in English). Most university would expect IELTS score between 6.5 to 7 with each component not below 5.5.
  • Personal statement with full details of purpose of study, future ambition, and career plan upon graduation with the degree

Conversion courses (postgraduate)

Conversion courses are usually one-year taught courses and are often heavily vocational. There are different levels of conversion courses: certificate, diploma, and masters.

This course is for those who studied different subject in undergraduate but would like to study other discipline without having any previous background. This course can also be helpful for you, if you come to a point where you think your chosen career is not right for you and would like to convert it to a different subject, you can think about conversion course. For example, a law conversion course or a Graduate Diploma in Law [GDL] for those in the know offers people who did not study law at undergraduate level to get a foot in the door of their chosen career in law. Equally, you can do conversion courses in other subjects, including psychology, social work, business and I.T.

Professional qualifications

There are many professional qualifications offered by universities and other professional bodies. These professional qualifications are basically entry qualifications for various careers. For example, if you want to be a solicitor, you will have to take legal practice course (LPC). The professional courses offer practical training and predominantly focuses on providing entry into a profession or allow you to develop your career further on an existing job.
